Dr. Janet Brill practices what she preaches. With a career dedicated to promoting health and wellness through nutrition consulting, speaking, writing freelance articles, and her new book, Cholestrol Down: 10 Simple Steps to Lower Your Cholesterol in 4 Weeks Without Prescription Drugs (Crown, Jan 2007), Dr. Brill implements the suggestions and information she uses to educate others into her own life.

Between participating in four marathons, countless 5K, 10K, and half-marathon road races, and a wide variety of other sports, she is also a self-described “semi-vegetarian” (she eats fish) and strongly follows a mainly “plant-based Mediterranean-style diet.”

“There is no medicine more powerful or supplement more effective in promoting health and longevity than the combination of good nutrition with daily exercise,” says Dr. Brill.

“My years of education and research have demonstrated to me the powerful effect that simple foods and light exercise can have on preventing disease,” explained Dr. Brill. “In the wise words of Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine (460-377 BC), ‘Let food be thy medicine, and let thy medicine be thy food.’”

Dr. Brill attended the University of Miami, where she received her undergraduate degree in biology. After that, she tested out her wings as a flight attendant for Pan American World Airways. She soon after decided to return to the University of Miami to earn her masters and doctoral degrees in exercise physiology. She also attended Florida International University, where she obtained a second masters degree in dietetics and nutrition. She graduated both schools with honors.

Dr. Brill is also a registered dietitian, certified personal trainer, and wellness coach. She is also a frequent guest on local South Florida television and an adjunct professor at the Robert Stempel School of Public Health at Florida International University in Miami, where she teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in nutrition, health, and fitness.

She’s also a member of The Obesity Society, the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Dietetic Association, the National Lipid Association, the National Strength and Conditioning Association, and the National Speakers Association, just to name a few.

“I have a great passion for what I do and a genuine desire to help others stay healthy and fit and protect their most valuable assets, their health,” said Dr. Brill.

Q. In your opinion, what does it take to be successful in the healthcare industry?

A. Success in any area of life comes from having a passion for what you do combined with a tremendous amount of hard work, perseverance, and an ability to undergo personal sacrifice to reach your goals.

Q. What do you enjoy doing when you aren’t working?

A. I enjoy spending time with my family, exercising, and traveling.

Q. Who is your role model?

A.
Jack LaLanne. He has shown the world that the fountain of youth lies not in a pill or injection but in the simple combination of healthy eating and daily exercise.

Q. What songs are on your IPOD right now?

A. I love to go running with my IPOD! I have a mixture of all types of music, but for running… I like to listen to mostly classic rock: Bruce Springsteen, The Beatles, Dylan, Rolling Stones, Donovan, etc.

Q. What’s your favorite book?

A. The Complete Book of Running, written by James F. Fixx, (Random House, 1977). As a young woman, I read the book, which turned into an event that sparked my lifelong interest in running, health, and fitness and thus inspired me to change my life for the better.
