Laser technicians are required to assemble, install, maintain and repair lasers that are used in different sectors of the industry. Some laser techs are known for working in the telecommunications industry or in the manufacturing field.

Duties

The duties of a laser technician include identifying defects. This is a very important task for laser techs because without running checks on lasers things could go wrong during the operation of them. Safety precautions must always be taken. Another job duty of a laser tech is to test new product designs. Working in this field, you may have to test out numerous new products involving lasers. During this process, you are required to ensure that they work properly and have no defects. Most of the time, laser techs work under the supervision of engineers in order to improve laser systems. This means that you will play an integral role in the process of testing and evaluating new and old lasers to see how they can be improved. Creating safety guidelines for the usage of lasers is another job duty of laser technicians, who must also arrange optical elements and maintain documentation of proper laser operation.



Education

Working in such a technical field, you will need to acquire a certificate or associate's degree in electrical, laser or electronic technology. Some of the courses that are recommended to be taken include optics, laser technology, physics and vacuum technology. These courses can be offered at local universities, community colleges and via the internet. Make sure to check that the institution that you're looking to obtain a certificate or degree from is an accredited school.

Skills

In order to be a success in laser technology, you will need to have good finger and hand dexterity, computer drafting abilities, interpersonal skills and electronic instrumentation skills.

Work Conditions

Most laser technicians are working in modern labs called clean rooms. The environment of these clean rooms are strictly controlled. Laser techs can end up working with hazardous materials, like discharge tubes filled with gas.

The annual salary of laser technicians can be anywhere between $45,595 and $70,317; depending on education, skill level and location.
