Having experience in a pharmaceutical field, processing claims using software may also be required. You will also be required to manage inventory, dispose of narcotics and mix compounds.
Retail Pharmacy Technicians
One area in the field you can work in as a pharmacy tech is in retail. In this position, you will be required to fill mail order prescriptions that were put in by doctors or patients. The duties in this field include counting pills, selecting the correct container, attaching the directions and pricing. As a retail pharmacy technician, you will have to ensure that the files of patients are updated regularly, manage inventory, work with health insurers and prepare insurance claims. You will be working under the supervision of a pharmacist.
Community Pharmacy Technicians
Another area you are able to work in is as a community pharmacy tech, which is a bit similar to the retail pharmacy position. In this field though, you will be responsible for mixing compounds, labeling prescriptions, accurately managing inventory, communicating with health care providers regarding patient records and training new techs. They are also required to work with patients directly in order to answer questions they may have and referring them to the pharmacist for prescription drop offs. In this field, you must also be aware of the state and federal regulations for medications, so that you are able to inform patients accordingly.
