As an x-ray technician, you will be using an x-ray machine to test and diagnose patients, by producing images of their insides. The machine uses electromagnetic energy to produce those images.

Function

Working in the field of x-ray technology, you will have to work in a clinical setting producing clear images of patients for the physician's interpretation.

Duties

Once the tests are given by the x-ray technician, it is their duty to explain to the patient about the results. They are also required to get them properly prepared to take the exam, which means positioning and shielding their body in other areas to avoid exposure to the radiation. After placing the patient correctly, the technician then places film into the x-ray machine and begins capturing images. The equipment's controls will need to be set before performing the test. Once the patient leaves, the images are developed.

Skills

Before providing the patient with the exam, the x-ray tech must first read the physician's directions to administer it correctly. There will be certain areas that need to be x-rayed. Also, the technician will also have to fill out info for medical records and routinely maintain and clean the x-ray machines.

Requirements

In order to become an x-ray technician, you must obtain a certificate through a one year program, an associate's degree from a two year college program or a four year bachelor's degree. It is required by the federal government that they obtain a state license before being able to practice. The exam usually requires a written exam.

Compensation

The median salary of x-ray techs is around $48,000 annually (back in 2006).
