As a medical coder, your job is to insert codes of various medical procedures, diagnoses and conditions within a database. In most cases, they are known to work for insurance companies, physicians' offices and hospitals. If you're looking to enter into the field, here are a few steps you will have to take.

Step One: First, you will need to get the right training, so that you can become a certified medical coding specialist. You can find programs like this within junior colleges, community colleges and tech schools. There are advanced degrees to choose from as well, including a bachelor's, which can take about four years to finish.



Step Two: Your next step to becoming a medical coder is to obtain certification. You will need to first complete college training, which will take about two years. Then you will have o take an exam to become registered as an information tech. You will need to apply to take the exam. They will mail you a letter, letting you know the date and time for taking the exam. It costs about $45 for the application and $280 for the exam.

Step Three: After you become a certified medical coding specialist, you will need to begin looking for work. You can look for positions within physician's offices, hospitals, insurance companies and medical clinics. Within some colleges, you will find a department that helps graduates to find work in their field.
