Are looking to work in a medical office, health care facility or insurance group? Consider training to become a medical credentialing specialist. In this field, you will have duties that include ensuring that the credentials of the facility that you're working for is kept up to date.

You may also help with audits that are performed by the facility you work for, prepare and maintain patient reports and summaries about their activities in the facility. Keeping summaries of facility privileges, memberships and facility accreditation is also required. When specific privileges are being requested by employees within a hospital, it is required of the credentialing specialist to check the guidelines of the state and federal government before approving it.

In order to become a credentialing specialist, you will have to obtain an undergraduate degree. Most employers require a minimum of an associate’s degree. You can find community colleges and vocational schools that offer these programs. You should also become familiar with the National Committee for Quality Assurance. This will teach you about the common needs of a medical organization, along with the required facility documents and provider credentials.

To be a medical credentialing specialist, you will have to be knowledgeable about spreadsheets, databases and word processing software. When you begin your training in this field, find out if they teach about Microsoft Word and Excel.

Once you become knowledgeable about the software and have trained in the field, you will be able to begin looking for work. You should start posting up your resume and looking on job boards online. Employment placement assistance is also provided by some programs, so make sure to ask. You can even go to staffing agencies to see if they have any positions available in your field.
