Do you want to help patients get to their doctor appointments? Consider becoming a medical transport provider. In this position, you will need to obtain training. There are different levels of education to choose from, so you will need to do your research and decide which is best for you.

There are different types of medical transportation out there. You can drive vans that have special lifts for those in wheelchairs and walkers. Your role would be to get the patients to the medical facilities they have an appointment at and bring them back home. In some instances, you will also be brining the patients to therapy and treatment appointments. Sometimes even to the mall or other shopping venue. To work in this field, you will have to be at least 18, although some companies will want you to be at least 21. You will have to have a certificate in CPR and knowledge about blood borne pathogens.

Another option for working as a medical transport provider is to become an EMT. You can obtain a certificate in EMT-Basic, where you will learn about CPR, life support, first aid and other advanced medical skills. In each ambulance, there are two people that have been trained, one is required to give patient care and the other is there to drive.

Your next option would be to get a certificate in EMT-Intermediate. You will learn about inserting IVs for medications and fluids. You will be in training for between six months to two years. Make sure that your state recognizes this certification because not all do.

Become an EMT-Paramedic. This is the highest level of medical transportation. With this option, you will be in extensive training. It will take two years to complete the program.
