ENT, is an abbreviation for ears, nose and throat. They also doctor other areas of the body including the head and neck. Another term for this field includes otolaryngologist. This specialty is one of the oldest in the medical field within America.
Specializations
There are seven areas that you're able to specialize in, including head and neck oncology, rhinology, laryngology, pediatrics, otology, allergies and facial plastic surgery.
Patient Population
Some of the people that you will be working with as a ENT doctor includes those that have been diagnosed with tonsillitis, ear infection, cancer within the neck or head, nosebleeds, sleep apnea, hearing loss and sinusitis. Those that work in ENT are known to work within doctors' offices and hospitals, performing surgeries.
Education
To train to get into this field, you will have to obtain a bachelor's degree and then go to medical school for another four years. Then a five year residency will have to be completed. You also have the option of completing a fellowship within a specialized area, which could take another one or two years to complete.
Demand
More than 50 percent of the patients that go to the hospital are there due to ear, neck and head conditions.
