When a patient has heart disease, they may see an invasive cardiologist. This professional uses therapeutic and diagnosis devices that is placed within the patient's body for heart treatment. Some of the devices that are used include stents, balloons and catheters. The practice of opening the patient's body to perform surgery on the heart is not a part of invasive cardiology.

Training

In the field of cardiology, you are trained to perform duties that are and aren't invasive. In most instances, you will only specialize in one area. With non-invasive methods, techniques from fields like radiology is used.

Use of Catheters

The use of catheters in cardiology is mainly used for treating and diagnosing cardiovascular issues. With this method, a catheter is inserted into the patient's blood vessel, either in their leg or arm. It threads to the heart for the purpose of medical procedures.

Balloons

Another method that is used is called balloon angioplasty. This is best for treatments for illnesses like coronary artery disease. With this method, a tiny balloon that is deflated is attached to a catheter that is placed into the artery of a patient. Then the balloon is inflated in order to compress plaque to the walls of the patient's arteries. This then allows blood to flow through easily.

Stents

This is another procedure that is used in invasive cardiology. A stent is a small device that looks like mesh. It is placed within the patient's plaque filled arteries that are blocked. The stent expands, allowing it to open up and allow blood to flow through.

Outlook

It was recorded that over 50 percent of U.S. cardiologists work as invasive cardiologists.
