If you've ever heard medical professionals talk, you may have heard words that you didn't understand. A lot of the words they have said may have been words that you've never heard. The medical language that they're speaking is called medical terms or medical terminology.

If you're studying to become a health care professional, you will need to study these terms in order to work in the field. Some professions require you to know more than others, such as in medical transcription and medical billing and coding. While studying medical terms, you will learn about prefixes, word roots and suffixes. You will learn the medical language for a variety of health conditions, procedures, diseases, locations and status of the illnesses. Here are a few tips that will help you during your studies of medical terminology.

Instructions

Step One: The first thing you will learn about are prefixes, which are the beginning of the terms. One example is the word prenatal and postnatal. The prefixes are pre and post. Prefixes are always located at the start of the word.

Step Two: The next thing you will learn are suffixes, which are the ending parts of a word. The definition of suffix is ''pertaining to''. Example being - itis, which means inflammation and -plasty, which means surgical repair.

Step Three: Last, you will learn about word roots, which are found in the middle, or body, of the words. One example is neuroplasty, which has a root (neuro) and suffix (plasty). Neuro means nerve and plasty means surgical repair. Put it together and it means surgical repair of a nerve.

Step Four: Now, you will need to begin studying the different medical terminology that is out there. Soon you will be well versed in it and will be ready to begin your career in the health care industry.
