Mammals are humans and animal species that have certain characteristics, such as giving birth to live babies, instead of laying eggs, and giving milk to our young.

In the field of mammalogy, you will be studying mammals and the function and management of the mammals that are living and extinct. Conducting research within a mammalogy workshop or other group setting may also be required. In some instances, mammalogist conduct studies alone.

Some of the duties of a mammalogists depends on where you're working and the position you hold. Some work as museum curators, which are required to coordinate a mammal specimens catalog using a computer program.

Tasks that are More Advanced

Other tasks they may have that are a bit more advanced include conducting advanced research of different mammals, publishing articles for peer-reviews, publishing books and managing students of undergraduate mammalogy.

Training

In order to become a mammalogist, you will have to study in courses like chemistry, biology and zoology. These will allow you obtain an entry level position in the field. If you go on to get an advanced degree, you will be studying in specialized areas. You will take courses like research and statistics.

Settings

Mammalogists are known to work outside and within facilities. They are known to work in state game and fish agencies (outdoors) and in museums. Some even work in zoos, federal government offices and colleges.

Compensation and Outlook

The amount you can make depends on where you are located in the U.S. The annual salary range for university professors is between $18,000 and $60,000. Then those that work within museums are known to make between $16,000 and $20,000 annually.
