After graduating with her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland, Irene Tamaras worked on transportation studies for the elderly and had no idea that her career in the healthcare profession would begin as the result of her own health problems.

A fall injured Tamaras’s lower back, leaving her with severe chronic pain and mobility problems. “I sought treatment after treatment for years at prestigious medical facilities in Maryland and Washington, DC, but sadly, I only got worse and was even told that I wouldn’t walk and to ‘get used to my condition,’” explained Tamaras.

“When I was literally at the end of my rope with nowhere to turn for help, I looked outside the box of mainstream Western medicine alone to other forms of treatments. By taking my healthcare into my own hands, this opened up all kinds of opportunities for my own healing. From all that, I learned and have been able to accomplish my own healing, my passion for healing, and helping others began to take shape.”

Tamaras soon founded Dynamic Pain Relief, a company that provides information and products to promote natural pain and stress relief. As CEO of the company, Tamaras’s goal is to help others improve their overall health and well-being through natural methods such as Reiki, Reflexology, Reflexotherapy, Qi Gong, meditation, and essential oils. She also conducts stress-management workshops and is a life coach for people with disabilities.

“I try to teach people to examine themselves and their challenges and then to make the changes within themselves and their lives. Change is very hard for many of us, but with time, patience, hard work, and a deep desire for a positive outcome, change can be very rewarding,” she said.

Tamaras’s expertise has been sought after and featured in many publications, including The New York Times, First for Women Magazine, Natural Health Magazine, and Women’s World Magazine. She has also been featured in two books-Healthy Travel: Don’t Travel Without It! and Relieving Pain Naturally. Tamaras has also written several articles, including “Activating the Healing Process,” which was recently featured on TherapyTimes.com. Currently, she is busy writing her first book on health and the healing process.

Q. What do you enjoy doing when you aren’t working?
A.
Even when I am not officially working, I am pretty much always thinking about or studying health and healing for my own personal pleasure.  I love reading and self-reflecting on books that elevate my spiritual consciousness and knowledge of the world.  Above all, I enjoy spending time with my teenage daughter, who keeps me smiling everyday.

Q. Who is your role model?

A. I don’t have one specific role model.  Instead, I try to learn from everyone I meet, young or old, no matter where I meet them.  As my awareness of the world has expanded, I try to look beneath everyone’s surface (even the most difficult people I have contact with) to uncover their own extraordinary qualities.  What I have learned is that everyone is challenged in one way or another, and I try to embrace everyone for what I can gain from knowing them.

Q. What songs are on your iPod right now?
A.
Well, I only recently got an iPod because my teenage daughter encouraged me to stay current and give up my bulky CD player and bags of CDs.  I have all kinds of music, ranging from Mario Frangoulis, an international tenor, and my favorite Greek artist, George Mazonakis, to current pop and hip-hop artists like Justin Timberlake.

Q. What’s your favorite book?
A. Since I’m writing my own book, I’d have to say that it is my favorite!  I love so many books, especially the kind that teach me about myself and life, and I have many of them listed on my website’s recommended-reading page.  But if I had to choose my favorite author whose books have taught me the most, it is Caroline Myss.  I have read all her books and love them all.

Although dealing with her health problems has been difficult for Tamaras, she claimed that it has given her better insight into how she can help others heal.

“From my personal experiences with mobility problems, chronic pain, and stress, I am able to connect with others facing difficult health challenges,” Tamaras explained. “My pain and healing journey has lasted many years, which has given me incredible awareness and knowledge that I try to apply, every day, to the work that I do.”
