Database Design and Maintenance
One of the career paths that are available is database administration. This is a very important job position that involves bioinformatics applications. The applications involve large databases of biochemical info and genomic sequences. These apps are used for generations of data sets of large sizes that are stored in spreadsheet formats and flat files. They must also be updated regularly. Over the past couple of years, data has constantly been growing and is going to continue to grow, so it is necessary that tools are designed by researchers that will make apps easier to use. Database administration researchers are constantly working on database design and maintenance in order to allow quicker extraction and information integration.
Pharmacogenomics
This is another form of bioinformatics that is quite essential for the design of clinical trials. It is also known for playing a large role in the future of drug development efforts. In pharmacogenomics, gene mutation databases show how they can cause diseases or enhance sensitivity to drugs - this is also known as nucleotide polymorphisms. These databases are studied by those in bioinformatics; the information that they find within the databases allows them to make decisions about clinical trials and drug development.
Proteomics
This field in bioinformatics is related to drug and gene therapy. It can easily be compared to genomic studies, but it is instead the study of part of the genome that is found in specific cells. Microarrays is a special form of technology that is used to permit thousands of genes within a cell pack to be examined quickly. This is a great improvement for the process of knowledge and discovery. Then later the results are entered into the database.
