If you like working in environments that require you to perform a variety of administrative and clerical duties within the health care industry, you should consider becoming a medical insurance specialist. This is known as being a very great career field with decent pay. The demand for medical insurance specialists is growing more and more, making it an ideal field to get into. To get into this industry, it will take time and effort.

Instructions

Step One: The first step is to take classes in high school involving math and science. Doing so will keep you on the edge and ready to take these classes in post-secondary college. It will make it easier for you to pass if you understand it while in high school.

Step Two: Another step you will need to take is obtaining experience before entering into college. As a medical insurance specialist, you will be required to know a lot of things. You will need skills and the background involving clerical support, finance and/or customer service. You can get this experience by volunteering your services at a nursing home, hospital or doctor's office.

Step Three: Now, you will need to begin learning the basics for medical terminology and medical coding. You can take these classes at your local community college. Or if you would like to learn on your own, you can read a variety of books that teach these lessons.

Step Four: Next, you will need to begin applying to colleges in order to study for an associate's degree in medical insurance billing and coding. It is required that you have a two year degree from a school that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education.

Step Five: After getting a degree, you can begin studying for the certification exam. After you pass it, you will be able to begin working in medical insurance billing and coding.
