Working as a pedorthist, you will be required to help patients with foot and ankle problems. You will provide health care, by supporting and treating their conditions with things like therapeutic shoes and orthotics.

In many cases a pedorthist will work alongside a podiatrist and physical therapist. Your job would be to provide necessary services to the patients in order to help them improve their physical health and life quality. To become a pedorthist, it is required that you complete a one year certificate program and obtain a national certificate.

Instructions

Step One: The first step is to begin preparing yourself for the profession by taking prep courses in physiology, biology, anatomy and biomechanics. You should also consider taking courses to obtain your associate's degree in a health care or related field before going into the industry of esthetics. This will give you the clinical and didactic experience you need to work in the field.

Step Two: Next, you will need to decide which of the pedorthist programs you would like to take and find out what their requirements are. There are a variety of institutions to pick from that offer certificate programs in this field. Make sure that the school is accredited by the NCOPE, also known as the National Commission on Orthotic and Prosthetic Education.

Step Three: Now, you will need to acquire the necessary experience needed through the completion of an internship within a professional setting. Some of your options for interning include hospitals, specialty centers and clinics. You will also need to complete about 1,000 hours of patient care to be eligible for a certificate and to obtain the real-life working experience needed. Some of the experience you will acquire include assessing patients, giving physical exams, working alongside doctors, creating proper orthotics and adjusting pedorthics devices.
