If you want to help cure diseases and illnesses of the physical brain, you should consider becoming a brain surgeon. Of course, you will first have to complete many years of medical school in the field studying the body and its many parts. After you graduate, you will need to become board certified to operate on people's central nervous system, which consists of the nerves, spinal cord, and brain. Another name for this profession is a neurosurgeon.

The role of a brain surgeon is to operate on the body's nervous system. Some common problems you will have to face in this career are tumors of the brain, spinal cord injuries, and diseases dealing with either the spinal cord or brain.

To become a neurosurgeon, you will have to obtain formal training in the field. You will be in school for about 14 years. You will have to obtain a bachelor's degree, which takes four years and then go on to medical school, which is another four years. Then another 6 years of residency will have to be completed. Some obtain a master's degree by going to school for another two years and go on to complete a fellowship program.



The amount of money you can make in this field is around $548,000 for base salaries.

It is expected that the field will grow by 14 percent through 2016. This is due to the increasing population of elderly people that need to have medical procedures performed.
