SICU Jobs description
Surgical Critical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) openings consist of intensivists, critical care registered nurses, registered respiratory therapists, and physical therapists. An SICU intensivist is a physician trained in critical care medicine who carries out treatment by surgical and non-surgical means for diseases and injuries. Duties include treating patients suffering from surgical shock, postoperative hemorrhages, respiratory failure, and other complications. An SICU nurse sets up equipment for and assists the physician with the medical procedures. An SICU nurse keeps an updated case sheet of the patient’s condition and progress, documents the administration of the medicines prescribed, and monitors the patient on regular basis practicing infection control measures. An SICU nurse should possess a thorough knowledge of the side effects, contraindications, and adverse reactions for all drugs and parenteral administered.An SICU respiratory therapist, who provides basic and advance respiratory care to the patient, should be able to handle variety of equipments such as mechanical ventilators and pressure transducers. Duties of a SICU respiratory therapist include assisting the physician in formulating an appropriate respiratory care plan based on the patient’s condition. An SICU physical therapist coordinates with the SICU physician and treats the patient accordingly during recuperation to improve his functional ability and to prevent further physical disability.
