Description
Performs the primary functions of a Professional Registered Respiratory Therapist in assessing, planning, implementing, educating, and evaluating a designated group of patients in accordance with established Respiratory Care Standards, Hospital and Departmental Policies. Manages all rehab supplies, and equipment in the hospital. Is responsible for providing leadership and resources for respiratory patient education, training, discharge planning, and procurement of home care equipment. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission and values.
Principle Accountabilites: % of Time Spent
1. Arranges home respiratory equipment per insurance criteria and patients 15%
preference. Coordinates with discharge planning to establish continuity of
care at home. Explains procedures and treatments to gain cooperation and
lessen apprehension of the patient. Prepares and updates care plans for
patient, including depart form. Ensures follow up phone calls with-in 24
hours of discharge.
2. Assesses condition of patient. Watches for change in condition or reactions. 10%
Evaluates emotional status of patient and offers counsel and support to
patient and their family. Communicates issues/concerns with physicians
and interdisciplinary discharge team.
3. Provides disease specific education to patients using a patient-centered 10%
care approach. Will work with patients to ensure they thoroughly
understand their medications and how to take them, teaches them relaxed
breathing techniques and breath recovery, goes over airway clearance
techniques and devices, and helps them learn how to identify the symptoms
of an impending exacerbation.
Measures their peak inspiratory flow and discuss smoking cessation when needed.
4. Enters information such as length/intensity of exercise, vital signs, specific 15%
needs of patient, and general condition into patient\u2019s chart. Checks electronic
medical record for completeness and accuracy. Leaves written or verbal report
for next day.
5. Uses equipment properly to assess patients\u2019 needs. Performs a variety 10%
of procedures as ordered by the physician.
6. Plans, coordinates, and provides Pulmonary Rehabilitation 10%
to patients in assigned area according to care plans, physician\u2019s orders,
and individual patient needs. Conforms to recognized Respiratory Care
techniques and procedures, established standards, and to the philosophy
and objectives of the Hospital.
7. Participates with formal QA/PI activities to ensure and enhance the quality 8%
of patient care. Produces quarterly report of these. Is capable of evaluating
and taking corrective actions based on results.
8. Management duties include; monthly rounding, six month conversations, 5%
self-evaluating with goal progression and annual performance review.
Orientate new therapists to pulmonary rehab job role and documents quarterly
competency. Submits monthly productivity reports, evaluates the data and takes action accordingly.
9. Oversees COPD readmission via assuring education occurs while an inpatient, 5%
actively pursues outpatient rehab prior to discharge, and ensures follow up
phone calls at prescribed intervals. Acts as a resource for all COPD readmits to
hospital committee with individual patient recommendation.
10. Attends in-service programs, skills labs, workshops, and meetings. Serves 5%
on committees as requested. Maintains the latest on new and changing
procedures in the Respiratory Care Field / Pulmonary Rehab. Is a resource
person for their peers, staff, and other members of the healthcare team with
questions and procedures. Performs training, quarterly competency, staff
evaluations, staff performance accountability and precepts students.
11. Responds to emergency situations. 4%
12. Maintains AACVPR accreditation. Oversees out-patient pulmonary rehab 2%
program.
13. Performs other work duties as assigned. 1%

Education
Associate\u2019s degree in Science or equivalent. Bachelor\u2019s degree in Science, Healthcare, or Management.
License - Certification - Registration (Text Only)Current BLS card and licensure by the State of Missouri as a Registered Respiratory Care Practitioner.
Experience
The assessment, care, and treatment provided by the therapist will be consistent with the specific age related needs of the patient. The therapist is competent to care for patient age groups including the neonatal, child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient. Critical thinking skills with the ability to make independent decisions based on patients needs/condition.
