Description
The Lactation Consultant is a specialist educated to focus on the needs and concerns of the mother and baby in order to prevent, recognize and solve breast feeding difficulties. The Lactation Consultant provides ongoing educational updates to the physician and nursing staff. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission and values.
 
Principle Accountabilities: 
 
 1. Oversees and coordinates lactating patients\u2019 needs by providing up-to-date and accurate          information and appropriate lactation assistance, applying age specific knowledge                    relevant to the care of the patient.
 2. Prioritizes services to inpatients as determined by:
     a. First time breast feeding mothers
     b. Breastfeeding problems/concerns identified by the nursing staff, physician or mother.
     c.  others whose baby is in SCN.
     d. Consultation requested by physician.
     e. Round on other breast feeding mothers as time permits.
 3. Develops and implements protocols and standards of care for assisting breastfeeding               mother in collaboration with the Medical Staff and Maternal Child Managers.           
 4. Precepts new employees, nursing students and resource for maternal and newborn staff.
 5. Conducts follow-up telephone calls to breastfeeding mothers who had lactation problems           while in the hospital.
 6. Answers the Lactation Center phone calls and maintains records of phone calls,refer to MD       if needed.                                       
 7. Provides consultation on an outpatient basis as a continuum of care for the breastfeeding         patient.  Maintains records of visits including assessment, actions, recommendations, and         referrals to physicians when needed. 
 8. Maintains appropriate consultation documentation and statistics.  
 9. Provides information for access to breastfeeding equipment and devices appropriate to the       lactating mother and breastfeeding infant. 
10. Evaluates products related to lactation and makes recommendations regarding their                benefits to the lactating women.  
11. Maintains knowledge of current lactation practice. Participates in professional
      organization for lactation.  Participates in promotion of lactation in the community.
12. Provides support and a positive environment for St. Luke\u2019s employees who wish to                  continue breastfeeding when returning to work.
13. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. 
Education
Nursing Degree Required
License - Certification - Registration (Text Only)Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Missouri Required.
Experience
Certification by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE)
One Year Experience working with lactating women and breastfeeding infants.
Self-motivated and can function independently.
The patient care provided will take into consideration the specific age related needs of the patient. The Lactation Consultant provides patient care to the adult population.
Current certification in a Basic Life Support required or course will need to be completed during orientation classes, prior to working on the nursing divisions. 
Certification in Neonatal Resuscitation Program
 
COMPETENCY WILL BE VALIDATED AT LEAST ONCE EVERY THREE YEARS.  STANDARDS DENOTING AN ANNUAL OR MORE FREQUENT COMPETENCY VALIDATION ARE LOCATED IN THE SCOPE OF PRACTICE.  COMPLETION OF HOSPITAL SAFETY PROGRAMS ARE REQUIRED ANNUALLY.  PARTICIPATION IN A BLS, IS REQUIRED EVERY TWO YEARS.
