A home health care aide is also known as a home caregiver. In this field, you will be working with individuals that are sick, immobile or senior citizens. These people live in their own residences, but require assistance with daily living tasks.

Some of the duties of a home health care aide include doing chores, grooming, shopping, hygiene, cooking and other light household tasks. Providing psychological support and friendship are the key goals of a home caregiver. Not all states require HHAs to have a certificate, but there will be a greater chance of finding employment by getting one.

First, you will need to thoroughly look into the field. You can find part time and fulltime positions in this field. Some even work with multiple individuals throughout the week. In some cases, you may end up working nights, holidays and weekends. Not all HHAs are employed by agencies; there are some that are self-employed. Others are hired by state and county private home health agencies or welfare agencies. It is important that you are able to work as a home health aide because it can be physically demanding at times. You will need to be in good physical condition and able to walk or stand for a long time. Lifting and moving patients may also be required.

Next, you will need to get the proper education in the field in order to work as a home health aide. Some employers will hire you with a high school diploma and train you on the job. You will need to become certified by taking the NAHC certificate exam. It isn’t always mandatory, but it is good to have. Now, that you have your certificate, you will be able to make between $6.33 and $12.84 hourly, which translates into $14,230 and $25,650 annually.
